Luján Statement on Confirmation of Frank Bisignano as Commissioner of the Social Security Administration
Republican-Led Confirmation Comes as Trump Administration Targets Social Security, Calls It A “Ponzi Scheme”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, issued the following statement after voting against Frank Bisignano to serve as Commissioner of the Social Security Administration:
“With President Trump and Elon Musk targeting New Mexicans’ Social Security benefits, the confirmation of Frank Bisignano only adds fuel to the fire and will make it even more difficult for seniors, people with disabilities, and families to access their benefits.
“During Mr. Bisignano’s confirmation hearing, I questioned him about the ongoing closures of Social Security field offices nationwide and pressed him to commit to keeping all offices in New Mexico open. His refusal to make that commitment – and lack of experience with the Social Security Administration – made it clear what his confirmation would mean to New Mexicans: more office closures, mass layoffs, and further attacks on their ability to access Social Security benefits.
“I have always fought to protect Social Security, which is why I voted against confirming Mr. Bisignano to lead the Social Security Administration. I will continue to defend Social Security by holding Mr. Bisignano and the Trump administration accountable for their attacks on the Social Security benefits that are a lifeline for more than 500,000 New Mexicans.”
