Luján: More Evidence that GOP Budget Betrayal Benefits the Wealthiest Americans, Abandons Working Families

Albuquerque, N.M. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) latest assessment that the GOP Budget Betrayal benefits the wealthiest Americans while abandoning working families:

“The nonpartisan CBO has confirmed what Senate Democrats have been warning all along: the Republican Budget Betrayal will benefit the country’s most wealthy while leaving the poorest Americans behind.

“The latest analysis shows that the wealthiest Americans will receive the biggest benefits, while the poorest Americans will lose $1,200 per year. This is what President Trump and Congressional Republicans fought to pass.”

According to the CBO, “Resources for households in the lowest decile of the income distribution will decrease by about $1,200 per year, on average, compared with their projected income in CBO’s January baseline projections. That amounts to 3.1 percent of their income. Those projected decreases are mainly attributable to reductions in in-kind transfers, such as Medicaid and SNAP.”

Senator Luján backed a series of amendments and motions to the Republican reconciliation bill aimed at protecting access to health care and nutrition programs and lowering costs for New Mexicans. Senate Republicans blocked these common-sense proposals from Senator Luján and Senate Democrats.
