Luján Statement on Republican Filibuster Against Commission to Investigate January 6th Insurrection

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after Senate Republicans filibustered the creation of an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate and report on the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

“What took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th is a stain on American history – and a scar on the lives that were forever changed from the violent insurrection. The American people deserve to know the facts about the insurrection, and creating an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate January 6th is an important step to restore faith in government and ensure that this never happens again.

“Yet not even the pleas of the family of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died following the violent insurrection, were enough to convince Senate Republicans to put aside politics aside. Electoral fears mattered more than truth and transparency.

“While Senate Republicans chose to block an independent, bipartisan commission, the truth remains that what happened on January 6th was a direct attack on our democracy. I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and that is why I returned to the Senate following the attack to complete the count of the Electoral College votes – and why I voted for the commission today.”
