Luján Votes Against President Trump’s Illegal War Against Iran
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after voting for a bipartisan War Powers Resolution that blocks the use of the U.S. Armed Forces from engaging in hostilities against Iran unless authorized by Congress:
“With no accountability and in defiance of the American people, President Trump has dragged the United States into an illegal war with Iran without congressional approval or a clear strategy. American lives have already been lost, and we cannot allow another endless conflict. The administration’s conflicting explanations and lack of clear objectives only raise more concerns.
“The Constitution is clear: the power to declare war belongs to Congress, not the President. We must uphold that responsibility and stop this unilateral military action. The American people do not want another costly war. That is why I voted to block the President’s reckless actions and reassert Congress’s constitutional authority.
“My prayers are with the six American service members we have lost, their families, and all those serving in our Armed Forces. Their service and heroism will never be forgotten.”
