Luján Statement on USDA Extending Free School Lunches Through 2022

Nambé, N.M. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, issued the following statement on the U.S. Department of Agriculture extending free school lunches for students through the 2021-2022 school year, including during summer months:

“Healthy meals help students thrive and find success in the classroom, and free school lunches have been a lifeline for New Mexico students throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s welcome news that Biden-Harris administration is supporting our students and families by extending free school lunches through the next school year, including during the summer months. Free and nutritious meals will help make a difference in the lives of the 12 million students experiencing food insecurity across America and will help provide continued market access for our state’s farmers and ranchers. As schools open their doors to students, it’s crucial that students continue to have access to critical support like school lunches.”
