Luján Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Speech

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M) issued the following statement after President Biden’s State of the Union speech:

“Tonight, President Biden delivered an optimistic and effective address to the American people detailing the progress made and the work that remains. President Biden and Congressional Democrats delivered a historic investment in our nation’s infrastructure, expanded veterans’ health care, promoted science and innovation, tackled the climate crisis, and cut health care costs. Despite a divided Congress, I am confident that President Biden will continue to find areas to work with Republicans and Democrats to deliver for the American people.

“I’m especially proud to work with President Biden to deliver $3.95 billion for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act, major investments to bridge the digital divide, and significant investments in our cutting-edge National Laboratories.

“During the speech, I was glad to hear President Biden highlight the urgent need to protect children online. As social media companies have capitalized on the huge role they play in our children’s lives, more protections are needed to help kids navigate the internet safely and responsibly. This is an issue that I’ve been proud to champion, and I will continue working to protect vulnerable communities and hold Big Tech accountable.

“Now, Congress must build on this momentum to support working families, create good-paying jobs, and keep our communities safe. Together, we can continue making a difference for New Mexicans.”
