Luján Statement on 5th Anniversary of January 6 Attack on U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the 5th anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol:
“Today marks five years since the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. Having just been sworn in to the U.S. Senate, I was inside the Capitol that day and witnessed the fear, confusion, and violence firsthand as a mob incited by President Trump overran the building and tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Despite this attack, our democracy did not break.
“Members of Congress, Capitol Police officers, staff, janitorial workers, and countless others who simply came to work were all put in danger. As we remember this dark chapter, we must also be clear-eyed about the present. President Trump’s actions to rewrite history and pardon those responsible for this violent attack dishonor the truth and send a dangerous message to the nation.
“On this day, I am thinking of the law enforcement officers who stood up to defend the Capitol, and of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. We will never forget them or their sacrifice. As a nation, we must come together to protect our democratic institutions and ensure that political violence is never normalized or rewarded in our country.”
