Luján Statement on Dismissal of Partisan Charges Against U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) joined the U.S. Senate in dismissing the impeachment charges against U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:

“Today, I joined the Senate in dismissing the partisan charges against Secretary Mayorkas so the Senate can get back to the business of the American people. With so many crises around the world, Congress cannot waste time on a baseless impeachment trial that sets a terrible precedent for our country. Let’s be abundantly clear, this impeachment trial was nothing more than a political stunt by a House Republican majority that is in disarray.

“Two months ago, the Senate came together to pass a bipartisan border security deal, but Senate Republicans walked away at the former president’s direction. House Republicans have also failed to produce a package of their own that can pass the Senate. Most importantly, House Republicans did not produce a single shred of evidence against Secretary Mayorkas – further proving they are more focused on playing politics than finding a solution to our border and immigration challenges.

“If Republicans want to have a serious policy discussion, I’m ready to listen. But using impeachment as a tool to score political points and settle policy disputes does nothing to help our country address the border.”
