Luján Launches Application Portal for Service Academy Nominations, Encourages New Mexicans to Apply

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) announced that his office will begin accepting applications from high school students and recent high school graduates seeking a nomination to a U.S. Service Academy through October 8, 2021.

“New Mexicans have a long history of answering the call to public service, and it’s my distinct honor to nominate young people to service academies each year,” said Luján. “As my office begins to accept applications, I encourage all prospective applicants to reach out for assistance. A nomination to a service academy is a life-changing opportunity for New Mexicans to build critical skills and serve our country.”

Applicants must submit an online questionnaire, a one-page personal essay, three letters of recommendation, official academic transcripts, and official standardized test scores. If nominated by Senator Luján, applicants must meet the individual admission requirements for each academy. Students may be nominated for more than one service academy. The academies make the final decision on who will receive an appointment of admission.

Selection to U.S. Service Academies is among the most competitive and rigorous in the country; regardless of the number of qualified applicants each Member of Congress nominates, only a select few are accepted by the service academies each year. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2022.

The deadline to apply is October 8, 2021. Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit Senator Luján’s Academy Nominations website for more information, and can apply directly here. Questions or requests for additional information can be directed to 202-224-6621 or ServiceAcademy@lujan.senate.gov.
